Book Description:

Brimming with Celtic mythology, action, and danger, Erika Lewis's Kelcie Murphy and The Academy for the Unbreakable Arts introduces readers to a new kind of magical school and a warrior who must choose with which side of an epic battle her destiny will lie.

The Otherworld is at war. The Academy for the Unbreakable Arts trains warriors. And Kelcie Murphy—a foster child raised in the human world—is dying to attend.

A place at AUA means meeting Scáthach, the legendary trainer of Celtic heroes. It means learning to fight with a sword. It means harnessing her hidden powers and—most importantly—finding out who her parents are, and why they abandoned her in Boston Harbor eight years ago.

When Kelcie tests into the school, she learns that she’s a Saiga, one of the most ancient beings in the Otherworld. Secretive, shunned, and possessed of imposing elemental powers, the Saiga are also kin to the Otherworld's most infamous traitor.

But Kelcie is a survivor, and she’ll do whatever it takes to find her parents and her place in their world. Even if that means making a few enemies.

Review:🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

An adventurous magical fantasy middle grade book! I was engrossed from the very beginning as Kelcie's story and life grabbed my attention and a sudden change in her situation through me into a new world where Kelcie uses her skills for survival she learned growing up in the foster system, now she uses to survive a world where once again she's shunned but now there's magic involved!

Then Nikki–the cross-dressing, funky boy who works in the dance shop–leaps into her life. Weighed down by family expectations, Rosa is at a crossroads, desperate to escape so she can show everyone what she can do when freed of her pointe shoes. Now is her chance to break away from a life in tulle, grooving to that unmistakable Minneapolis sound reverberating through every bone in her body.

🦋Blogger notes: This is a spotlight post so no review and I haven't finished reading all of it yet, although I plan to soon. Jumping to this book was like a throw back to my childhood, although I wasn't a dancer and didn't know many of the ballet terms, the setting in the 80s and references to Prince warmed my heart that is a lover of all things 80s!So thank you to the author for that walk down memory lane!🦋

Book Summary:

When Crown Princess Justine of Wesloria is sent to England to learn the ropes of royalty, she falls under the tutelage of none other than Queen Victoria herself. She’s also in the market for a proper husband—one fit to marry the future Queen of Wesloria.
Because he knows simply everyone, William, Lord Douglas (the notoriously rakish heir to the Duke of Hamilton seat in Scotland, and decidedly not husband material), is on hand as an escort of sorts. William has been recruited to keep an eye on the royal matchmaker for the Weslorian Prime Minister, tasked to ensure the princess is matched with a man of quality...and one who will be sympathetic to the prime minister’s views. As William and Justine are forced to scrutinize an endless parade of England’s best bachelors, they become friends. But when the crowd of potential grooms is steadily culled, what if William is the last bachelor standing?

Review:🦋🦋🦋🦋
This was a sweet slow historical fiction romance. The characters were relatable and the plot was something new to me as this time it include a Princess who is mostly misunderstood and  she's send to Queen Victoria to learn Royalty life and then put under the watchful eye of William as she is now needing a good eligibility husband. But the more these two spend time together, the more feeling start to grow.

Middle Grade Fiction

Tick . . . tick . . . tick . . .

Time is running out in the empire of Rheinvelt.

The sudden appearance of a strange and frightening statue foretells darkness. The Hierophants—magic users of the highest order—have fled the land. And the shadowy beasts of the nearby Hinterlands are gathering near the borders, preparing for an attack.

Young Prince Alphonsus is sent by his mother, the Empress Sabine, to reassure the people while she works to quell the threat of war. But Alphonsus has other problems on his mind, including a great secret: He has a clock in his chest where his heart should be—and it’s begun to run backwards, counting down to his unknown fate.

Searching for answers about the clock, Alphonsus meets Esme, a Hierophant girl who has returned to the empire in search of a sorceress known as the Nachtfrau. When riddles from their shared past threaten the future of the empire, Alphonsus and Esme must learn to trust each other and work together to save it—or see the destruction of everything they both love.

Review:🦋🦋🦋🦋

An intriguing German folkore with steampunk vibes. This story was very compelling with a unique magic system and two likable characters who must find answers to save themselves and their world if they can learn to trust each other. I think this is a worthy read for middle grade and older readers alike!

Book Summary:

Three siblings. A priceless family ring. One legendary love story.

In 1978, Lizzie Morgan and Ritchie Schneider embark on a whirlwind romance on the bright beaches and glamorous yachts of Long Island. Over the years, their relationship has its share of ups and downs, including a nine-month hiatus that ends with a stunning eleven-carat ring—one that looks just like the diamond Richard Burton gifted Liz Taylor after their own separation. Like the famous couple, despite the drama that would unfold throughout the Schneiders’ marriage, the ring would be there as a symbol of their love…until it wasn't.

Decades later, when the lost ring unexpectedly resurfaces, the Schneiders’ three children gather under one roof for the first time in years, eager to get their hands on this beloved, expensive reminder of their departed parents. But determining the fate of the heirloom is no simple task, unearthing old wounds and heartaches the siblings can't ignore. And when the ring reveals a secret that challenges everything they thought they knew about their parents’ epic love story, they’ll have to decide whether to move forward as a family or let the ring break them once and for all.

Review:🦋🦋🦋🦋

A very intriguing historical mystery of family, romance and heartbreak. I enjoyed reading the parent's backstory and going along on the journey with the siblings to find out what they thought they knew may not have been what was the truth about their parents. The beginning of how their parents story began and resemble the famous couple with the same names had me hanging on to find out more. The mystery of the ring kept me turning the page to the very end!

I’ve always believed in being the change you want to see. But I never imagined that would cause me to be dipped in gold paint, bedazzled in beads, and flaunted on a float in an outfit that would make RuPaul proud. When the party is over, there are more than stray beads left on the streets. A body has been found, and as the days pass, the killer shows no sign of stopping. I’m feeling eyes on me wherever I go, and the oversized footprints outside of my dwelling tell a story all their own. The beast tearing people apart has its sights set on me as the next victim. It’s time to swallow my pride and pull out the big guns, a member of the Cortez vampire court.

Having a witch queen makes their problems ours. Which is how I landed on this glorified babysitting duty. At least this assignment promises adventure. Somehow, the sassy-mouthed witch who co-runs the supernatural investigation company Witch For Hire has gained herself an unwanted admirer of the furry kind. Everyday Prayers for Joy Tour

                       About the Book

Book: Everyday Prayers for Joy

Author: Gina L. Smith

Genre: RELIGION / Christian Living/Devotional Journal

Release date: January 4, 2022

Jesus promises us that the world will give us trials and tribulations, but our hearts should not be troubled. James urges us to “count it all joy…when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.”

In Everyday Prayers for Joy, author Gina L. Smith shares the life-changing lesson she learned to lament in prayer in order to find joy during hard times and changing circumstances.

When she found herself in a difficult season and cried out to God, “He opened my eyes to the fact that often I find joy in the blessings He has provided for me more than I find joy in Him, the provider of the blessings. I needed to begin the process of learning what it meant to find joy in Christ alone.”

Biblical joy, Gina explains, “is something that exists even when we are suffering or going through a heavy trial because it’s based on the knowledge that God is present, walking with us in our trials, and is producing good fruit in us as we go through them.”

In this thirty-day devotional, Gina offers powerful prayers of lament to move past our problems and focus on the source of all love and goodness.

“The prayer of lament is the prayer for a suffering soul,” she says. “It is our fight with our soul to remember there is a future.…God gave us the prayers of lament to help us process the suffering we face in this life. When we don’t use or understand them, we’re actually missing out on the experience of going to the One who loves us most and can actually heal our hearts and help us to get to the point where our gaze breaks through to eternity. Lamenting is the way we come to God when life is overwhelming.”

Each daily entry includes something to think about, space for journaling thoughts, prayer, and praise, and questions for deeper reflection.

 Review:🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

This devotional journal was very informative, encouraging and enlightening at just the moment I needed it! Though I would have preferred a physical copy to write in book, having a notebook/journal to write in for the daily entries and questions gave me more room to express myself. I highly recommend this book whether you're going through a rough patch or in top of the mountain, this book gives you tools for finding true Joy!

Book Description:

Barclay and his friends must save an island city from the Legendary Beast of the Sea in this exciting second book in the Wilderlore series, perfect for fans of Nevermoor and How to Train Your Dragon.

Something is wrong at the Sea. The weeping tide, a carnivorous algae bloom, is eating up all the fish. Beasts are terrorizing the nearby Elsewheres. And Lochmordra, the Legendary Beast, is rising at random and swallowing ships whole.

Barclay’s teacher, the famous Guardian Keeper Runa Rasgar, has been summoned to investigate, and as her apprentice, Barclay gets to join too. But Runa’s nemesis has also been called to the Sea, and he’s brought apprentices of his own. When the not-so friendly competition between them grows fierce, it’s Barclay—the only one from the Elsewheres—who can’t seem to keep up.

The key to stopping Lochmordra lies in his mythical home, but as the flood of the weeping tide encroaches, time is running out to find it. If the rival groups can’t cast aside old grudges and learn to work together, soon the Sea will be destroyed completely. And all the while Barclay must ask himself: is there truly a place for him in the Wilderlands?

Review:🦋🦋🦋🦋
I didn't quite know what to expect from this book as I hadn't read the first in the series but there's enough information to make the story flow flawlessly so while you can read this story as a standalone and not feel like you're missing something, I totally recommend reading book 1 first. There's a plethora of characters besides our group of main characters that starts out together at the beginning. Our main characters are Lore Keepers who each carry a mark that contains a beast and each special powers called lores that aid them in fighting unruly, nasty and dangerous beast that try to harm the citizens of Elsewheres. The Keepers are their protectors but because they usually show up when monsters do,they're looked down upon by the humans of Elsewheres. This often makes their jobs harder and some apprentices feel rejected. While Barclay is trying to learn to control his lore and dealing with emotional issues of rejection and doubts brought on by this rejection, he must fight to help solve the emerging beast problem before things get worse. All our main characters have depth, personalities and struggles that pur fleshed out on the pages which make them feel real and you find yourself wanting to help, comfort, and root for them through there adventures. I really enjoyed this story, it is a unique plot with maybe a touch of Fantastic Beasts vibes and continous action packed adventure. This book is categorized as middle grade but I think it can be enjoyed by all age groups.

The High-Wire Heartbreak Celebration Tour

About the Book

Book: High-Wire Heartbreak

Author: Anna Schmidt

Genre: Christian/Romance/History

Release date: January 1, 2022

In 1936–A party at the Ringling mansion Ca d’Zan in Sarasota, Florida, leads to a robbery–and possibly death.

A successful historical mystery writer, Chloe Whitfield comes to Ca’ d’Zan to research her next novel. Chloe’s fascination with the circus is rooted in family stories of her great-grandmother Lucinda Conroy, who reportedly was a trapeze artist of some renown. She’s heard hints of scandal—and perhaps larceny, but no details.

Chloe’s grandmother—rumored to be Lucinda’s only offspring—was raised in an orphanage and never knew her mother. Intrigued as she is, Chloe has no intent of writing about Lucinda until she sees a poster featuring Lucinda as the star performer for a 70th birthday gala for John Ringling in May of 1936. From there the trail goes cold.

Who was Lucinda and what happened to her?

 Review:🦋🦋🦋🦋

Being a historical novel, I hadn't expected the dual time line but the author did a phenomenal job at interweaving both while still making the plot flow flawlessly! I grew up with the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus coming town every year, so this definitely caught my intrigue when reading the synopsis. The characters felt real and lovable, the twists and mystery with some romance kept me turning the page, and the ending was well done. I highly recommend this book!

More from Anna

It’s hard to split time living between Wisconsin and Sarasota Florida and NOT get caught up in the circus world! The Ringlings are icons in Sarasota where a LOT of things are named for them! But the five circus brothers got their start right here in Wisconsin. So, when the opportunity to create a story for DOORS TO THE PAST came my way, it was pretty much a no-brainer that I would go with John and Mable Ringling’s incredible home, Ca ‘d Zan as the setting. Then somehow, I stumbled on this picture:

and I knew she was my character of Lucinda, the trapeze artist whose story would drive my novel. I hope you fall in love with her—and Chloe—as I did, and most of all I hope you’ll be in touch to let me know what you thought at http://booksbyanna.com.

HAPPY READING and all best wishes, Anna
