Review๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹

I love when historical fiction books are also educational and brings awareness to situations we may not have otherwise known about! The author brings in struggles from 1884 in Eureka,California with the rich and local businessmen looking down on the Chinese workers and the poor prostitutes on Second Street. But Ida has a heart for Jesus and the "lowly of these" and the persecuted, she feels deeply in her heart that they deserve to know the love Jesus just as anyone else. Her compassion and mission brings struggles for her along with her budding romance with Blaine another well off man who sees things like Ida does and believes God has spoken to him telling him this is to be his wife. Together they must fight for their relationship, love, and compassion for others and pray it doesn't leas to destruction. Their faith is tested but in the test fire purifies the vessel and what emerges through perseverance is growth!

About the Author

Barbara Tifft Blakey lives in the Pacific Northwest on five wooded acres with Terry, her husband of forty-plus years. She is best known for her award-winning, literature-inspired, language arts program, Total Language Plus, which she created over twenty years ago, and is used by thousands of homeschoolers. Barbara teaches Sunday school and enjoys speaking on various topics to Christian womenโ€™s groups. She and her husband have four grown children and five grandchildren. She enjoys camping at the ocean and is an avid soccer fan. During the day-light challenged winter months, she reads, crochets, bakes, and plots her next novel.

More from Barbara

As the birthplace of my mother, Eureka, California holds a special charm for me intensified by my grandmotherโ€™s stories of the area. Every visit Iโ€™ve made has encouraged me to dig deeper, to learn more, to experience this small, coastal townโ€™s magnetism.

Its history includes the Wiyotโ€™s massacre on Indian Island which can be viewed from the harbor and the expulsion of the Chinese population from Humboldt County. Carsonโ€™s Mansion is the most photographed Victorian dwelling in California, and possibly the United States, built to keep the lumber baronโ€™s loggers employed during a downturn in the timber industry. Because of the numerous brothels, an entire section of Second Street located in the heart of the community was deemed out of bounds for children.

Both hero and heroine in Angel of Second Street are fictional, but my cast of characters includes real-life people such as Reverend Huntington, David Kendall, and Wei Lum and real historical businesses such as Wells Drug Store and Kitty Farrisโ€™s Joy Emporium.

I first wrote a version of this story more than a decade ago, but who can argue with Godโ€™s timing? Events that happened over 150 years ago feel current in todayโ€™s political climate where fear tactics dominate debates and spur regrettable actions. I didnโ€™t set out to make a political statement, only to tell an engaging, thought-provoking love story, but in the midst of relating historical events, a deeper truth emerged as relevant today as it was in the mid 1800s.

I pray youโ€™ll journey with Ida and Blaine through the turmoil of their times and be enriched to face the trials of today with renewed hope.

 Review:๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹

This Christian Historical Romance story was enjoyable to read. A marriage of convenience with two broken souls slowly grows into something beautiful. Amidst the struggles that come their way, the find faith, trust love.

About the Author

Jackie Killelea is a born and raised small-town girl from Connecticut with a degree in English and Creative Writing. She started off her writing journey with poetry, soon shifting into novels and becoming hooked. On days when sheโ€™s not busy with her nose in a book, she can be found typing away with a cup of tea at her side.

More from Jackie

In Arranged with the Earl, Loftusโ€™ study of plants and flora is his foremost pastime, aside from his duties managing his estate and those that come along with being an earl. In his conservatory, there are a variety of different species of plants that he cares for but, would he actually have had these plants in his conservatory and would they have been able to feasibly grow there if he did?

Well, according to my research and a bit of wishful thinkingโ€ฆyes.

The thing is, Loftus has a few native plants in his conservatory and those certainly would have been able to grow there, given that theyโ€™ve pretty much just been brought inside from other counties in England. Loftus knows his home country and the landscape as well as how to care for those plants, already. The trickier plants to think upon are the exotics.

For instance, when showing Catherine the conservatory for the first time, he mentions Black Hellebore(Helleborus niger). How would he have come to own this? This plant is native to the mountains and woodlands of southern and central Europe, so we must assume that Loftus wouldโ€™ve had it imported, or grown from seed. Still, would a woodland plant grow well enough to produce flowers in a conservatory setting?

Well, fortunately for Loftus, Black Hellebore actually grows fairly well in containers and does well in partial shade, so where he placed it in the conservatory was a prime location and it isnโ€™t a stretch of the imagination to think that it produces blooms there.

With each plant I chose to be in the conservatory, I had to research if Loftus would reasonably have access to it and if it would grow under conservatory conditionsโ€“as well as during the season in which the book takes place. Of course you, as readers, will still need to use your imagination at some points. Iโ€™m sure Loftus would agree that ideas, like plants, need lots of water and space to grow.

I do so hope you enjoy Catherine and Loftusnโ€™ story in Arranged with the Earl!

Sincerely,

Jackie

Don't worry. I'll keep you safe.

I promise. Just close your eyes.

Sleep.

Grief has five stages, they say. But in the mafia, there's only one: survival.

The day I buried my boyfriend, the Families replaced him with the man who rejected me four years agoโ€”Ace "Matchstick" De Lange. Cold. Calculated. Deadly. He has the bedside manner of a serial killer and the looks of a fallen angel. And now, he's my shadow, ensuring I don't end up in the grave beside the man who died for me.

I despise that I'm the one left behind. I loathe how Ace provokes me, pulling me from the abyss of my sorrow. But most of all, I hate that the only piece I have left of my dead boyfriend is something others would kill to possess.

When Ace uncovers my secret, there's only one solution: marriage to the devil himself to protect the legacy of the one who had no choice.

I vow never to love him. He promises he'll never love me.

He's a means to an endโ€”the only one who can stand against my father and live to tell the tale.

He claims his life is mine, but I don't want it.

I tell him I'll never be his.

Ace's response? A chilling, "We'll see."

But what happens when everything you believed was a lie? When the only one who can free you from your nightmare threatens to drag you deeper into the darkness?

Review ๐Ÿฆ‹ ๐Ÿฆ‹ ๐Ÿฆ‹ ๐Ÿฆ‹ ๐Ÿฆ‹
I'm absolutely in a series book hangover! Rachel Van Dyken had done it again with her skill to write an intriguing, emotional roller-coaster,gritty,slow burn Mafia story! This book can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend reading Ciao Bella first and the other Eagle Elite books if you want but it isnโ€™t necessary to enjoy this story! The slow burn and banter between these enemy to lovers is spot on as is the build up of the plot and climax! And that ending..I'm desperately needing the next book and can't wait to see where the author takes us next in this phenomenal series!

More from Carole

When I started this series (The Appleton, WV Romantic Mysteries) I didnโ€™t realize that I would, someday in the future, be writing Book Eight. Truly, this series is one of my readersโ€™ favorites with many of them asking when the next book is coming out.

When I plotted The Herbalist, I knew the basic outline of how the story would go, but I didnโ€™t realize all the technical details I would need to research, even though most of it, in the book, isnโ€™t indepth.

Car items:  fuel pumps, oil leakages, failing brakes.

Dementia:  mental stability, actions, progression, and more.

Police procedures: The various actions from a police crew when thereโ€™s a murder, the people who examine bodies, the leniency that can or can not be used in a murder case.

and other items I studied. It was both fascinating and tedious, but necessary.

But I love research, so most times I enjoy it, especially when it comes to my books.

I wanted to create an interesting and catching story that was as real as I could make it. Though the major plot scene was planned, at times, I would be stuck, wondering what should happen next. And lying in bed at night is sometimes my best time to think of the a scene and how to write it. I love it when this happens, because itโ€™s the perfect idea for my book. So I jump from my bed to scribble down the thought at my desk.

In The Herbalist, a young mother with five-year-old twins, is accused of murder, but itโ€™s a long, lonely walk down this West Virginia road, especially when you trust few people. Can Lana Taylor prove she isnโ€™t guilty? Can she realize that she does have a few friends whoโ€™ll stick by her regardless of the accusations? And can she forget the past and learn to trust again?

And will Athan Meadows be able to not only find the answers Lana needs, but also win her trust and love?

Find the answers in: THE HERBALIST.

 Review:๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹

This was an enjoyable collaboration of seven different authors about seven different brothers and seven different women. Each is a bit unique with a bit of humor dashed in as a father gives his son's an ultimatum to marry within a year to keep their inheritance and a grandfather who decides to help in the process. I love how each story finds it perfect ending and relished the journey of getting there!

About the Authors

Gabrielle Meyer, a Minnesota native, draws inspiration for her historical fiction from the rich stories and landscapes of her home state, where she lives on the banks of the upper Mississippi River with her husband and four children. A former employee of the Minnesota Historical Society, Gabrielle loves weaving real people, places, and events into her captivating tales.

Best-selling, award-winning author Erica Vetsch weaves her love for Jesus, history, romance, and sports into her stories, including The Debutanteโ€™s Code, the first in the Thorndike & Swann Regency Mystery Series. When sheโ€™s not crafting fiction or planning her next trip to a history museum.

Bestselling author Amanda Barratt brings to life overlooked moments in history through her award-winning novels, including The Warsaw SistersWithin These Walls of Sorrow, and The White Rose Resists. Based in Michigan, sheโ€™s often immersed in research, tackling her ever-growing TBR stack, or savoring a slice of lemon cake.

Carol Award finalist Lorna Seilstad explores lifeโ€™s complexities with humor in her nine novels, including the Lake Manawa Summers and Gregory Sisters series, as well as several novella collections. When sheโ€™s not writing, she teaches womenโ€™s Bible classes, runs a toy store, plans weddings, or spends time with her Pyredoodle, Honey Bea.

Keli Gwyn crafts inspirational historical romances that she loves to read. A California native, she now lives in the greater Sacramento area with her husband and their sweet orange tabby, enjoying life close to family.

Vickie McDonough, a CBA, EPCA, and Amazon best-selling author of 54 books and novellas, brings the Old West to life in her award-winning romances featuring ranchers, cowboys, and lawmen. Though married to a computer geek who fears horses, she lives out her ranching dreams through her storiesโ€”and when sheโ€™s not writing, she enjoys reading, gardening, making cards, and traveling.

More from Erica

Hi, Iโ€™m Erica Vetsch, and I loved collaborating on the stories for the 7 Brides for 7 Texans collection. It was fun writing stories that were so intertwined, and working closely with the other authors in the collection to bring the whole concept together.

Initially, I was approached by a publisher, asking if I would be interested in heading up a novella collection loosely based on the idea of 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, the classic musical. The parameters were that the stories must be no longer than 25K words, be historical in setting, and that I could choose the overall concept, as well as my team of authors.

I, of course, jumped at the chance. Before I contacted anyone, I worked up a rough idea of the premise of the stories. A wealthy Texas rancher with seven strapping sons is tired of waiting for them to get married and provide him with grandchildren, so he issues an ultimatum. Get married by the end of the calendar year, or youโ€™re disinherited.

I named all the sons after famous Texans, and gave them a birth order, then I began contacting writing friends to see if they were interested in joining the project. Everyone I asked said yes!

Then the real fun began. We formed a private Facebook group, and as the characters were chosen by the various authors, the order of the stories in the collection formed, and as ideas for storylines poured in, I began creating what we came to call The Master Document.

In the MD we tracked main charactersโ€™ names and appearances, secondary characters, a map of the fictional town of Hartsville, TX, and more. It eventually ran to more than 20 pages of information. We named the town newspaper, the general store, and kept track of the layout of the Hartsโ€™ massive ranch house. Keeping these details all in one place made it easy for the authors to flesh out their story world in a way that was consistent with everyone elseโ€™s stories.

Because the stories are so closely tied and on such a tight timeline, each of the authorsโ€™ characters would appear in another authorโ€™s novella. We needed to respect each otherโ€™s visions for the characters and treat them with respect, while also having the freedom to write our own stories.

Early on, as the project coordinator, it was established that if a dispute arose between two authors on how something should go, it would be myself who would cast the final vote. However, that contingency never came into play, as all the authors worked so well together.

One of the most challenging aspects of the project was, that as the project lead, and the one writing the final story in the collection, I needed to know the most about all the stories. Just before the deadline to turn our stories into the publisher, each author sent their story along to me to read for continuity. I spent a long weekend at author Gabrielle Meyerโ€™s house, and we read every novella aloud, making notes for consistency and continuity throughout. These notes were turned in to the project editor, and she used them in her editing process to make sure seven separate stories felt cohesive.

It truly was a funโ€”and to meโ€”unique, project, and when the publisher asked if I would like to head up a follow up collection, I was eager to say yes, and thus 7 Brides for 7 Texas Rangers was born.

Both of these intertwined collections went out of print, but they are now being released once more, this time through Wild Heart Books. Iโ€™m thrilled that we can tell our stories to new readers and prolong the lives of these characters.

This book drags you deep into affects the history of the Civil War and the Old West had on the people of that time. This historical time has always been fascinating to me and the author definitely brings it to the forefront for us to see the struggles that weren't often talked about but surely existed. The Cotton Road

I loved the opportunity to tie the Texas frontier and the Civil War together in Texas Divided, the second book in my Lone Star Redemption series.

I have been an avid student of the Civil War for a couple decades. However, until I started researching for Texas Divided, I had no clue that the Yankees ever invaded Texas. But they did in November 1863. Why? It was because of cotton. By 1863, the Federal blockade of the Confederate coastline was fairly secure, and Texas became the golden gateway for funding the Confederacy.

Cotton from Arkansas, western Louisiana, and east Texas traveled the Cotton Road. This dusty trail ran from the railroad terminus in Alleyton, TX (about seventy miles west of Houston) by way of Kingโ€™s Ranch near Corpus Christi to Brownsville and across the Rio Grande to Matamoros, Mexico, the largest cotton market in the world during the war. In regards to commercial activity, it rivaled pre-war New Orleans or Baltimore.

A young teamster wrote that from the watchtower at Kingโ€™s Ranch, the main stop on the way to Matamoros, he could see hundreds of wagons on the road at one time, a long train of dust rising up as they traveled toward Brownsville and the Rio Grande.

At some points the trail was almost a mile wide due to traffic, and more than one hundred miles of it was desert with no water. Puffs of cotton clung to the sagebrush and cacti along the way and lingered for years after the war.

When the cotton reached Matamoros, it was loaded onto steamboats and/or wagons owned by Mexicans and transported to the mouth of the Rio Grande at the Gulf of Mexico. International ships from Britain, France, and other countries hovered there, sometimes hundreds at a time, waiting to fill their hulls with cotton. And the Yankees couldnโ€™t stop them. If a Federal ship fired on a British, French, Mexican, or ship of another nationality, it could have been considered an act of war.

By 1863, cotton, which had sold for .10 cents a pound in 1860, now sold for as much as $1.89 a pound, and one bale averaged 450 โ€“ 500 pounds. The money made on the sale of cotton was the financial bloodline of the Confederacy. For example, in just one week in August, twenty thousand pounds of gunpowder arrived in Brownsville, purchased with proceeds from the sale of cotton.

Thatโ€™s why the Federal Army invaded Brownsville in early November 1863. Their mission was to stop or at least seriously hinder the cotton trade. Doing so could save lives on the battlefield and perhaps bring an earlier end to the war.

The Yankees reached the city without any resistance. However, they found a meager one hundred and fifty bales on the Texas side of the river and could only gaze at the more than ten thousand bales stacked along the Mexican wharves. The Rebs had moved or destroyed everything of value.

The invasion lasted for several months and forced the Confederates to improvise and find new trails for the cotton shipments, hauling the loads via San Antonio to Eagle Pass and Laredo. Unfortunately, the Yankees only netted a hundred or so bales here and there.

Cotton continued to reign until the war efforts in the East bled the Confederacy dry. But for those few months at the end of 1863, hopes were high, especially amongst the two regiments of Texas cavalry fighting for the Union, Texans who abhorred the Confederacy and who had left Texas to avoid being forced into the Reb army. These men returned with the Federal troops in November 1863 to restore Texas to the Union and wreak havoc on the Cotton Road.

Lieutenant Devon Reynolds is one of these Texans, loyal to the Union, and determined to do his part to rescue Texas from the grip of the Confederacy. Except in his case, he trades his Yankee uniform for that of a Confederate and dons an eye patch, operating as a spy and saboteur. But his life becomes complicated and his mission uncertain when he runs into Morning Fawn, the woman he kidnapped from the Comanche eighteen months before. As far as sheโ€™s concerned, he ruined her life by sentencing her to her uncleโ€™s plantation. Can he complete the mission and right the wrong? Texas Divided is a story of redemption, faithfulness, and perseverance. The characters come to an end of themselves and discover that God can make a way where there was no way.

 About the Book

Book: The Bible Companion Book 1 Genesisโ€“Exodus: Journey through Scripture One Day at a Time

Author: Karen Westbrook Moderow

Genre: Bible Study

Release date: April 16, 2024

The Bible Companion series is a simple, flexible, and compelling Bible Study guide. Short daily readings link Godโ€™s story to yours, help you through difficult passages, and highlight the treasures in each chapter of the Bible. In Genesis and Exodus, God reveals Himself as a loving Creator who longs to walk through life with you. Book 1 takes you deep into Godโ€™s plan to share His life and wisdom with those who love and follow Him. The storytelling approach of the series will keep you reading, even through the parts that are challenging and hard-to-understand. Find hope in the stories of ordinary men and women in the Bible whose encounters with God transformed them and reversed the direction of their lives. Discover that what God has done for them, He can do for you.

 Review:๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹

This Companion was very easy to follow it takes one chapter at a time and adds a summary and commentary of important part of the reading then asks you a question to help you engage with the Scripture and apply to your life. I found this helpful as a seasoned Christian whose read these Scriptures multiple times yet it can be helpful for someone just starting out in this journey or someone rereading through the Bible. You can use this as a daily companion whether you want to do one chapter at a time or more.Unfortunately I missed sign up for book 2 but will be purchasing it in the future as I'm looking forward to reading through the Bible from beginning to end one chapter at a time.

More from Karen

A Father-Daughter Legacy: The Bible Companion Series
In 1993, my father, Pastor Floyd Westbrook challenged a group of men and women from his weekly Bible study to join him in reading the Bible from cover to cover. He found if he wrote short daily lessons for each chapter, people stayed engaged and were transformed by the Scripture they read. His work, though enjoyed by hundreds, was never widely published.
I shared his passion for making Godโ€™s word accessible to people who found it hard to understand parts of the Bible, couldnโ€™t keep up with the schedule, or couldnโ€™t relate Scripture to their journey. Later, after I completed degrees in theology and creative writing, we realized combining storytelling with his format could help people overcome the most common barriers to Bible reading. With his blessing, I began working on The Bible Companion. The result is a story-rich study which is simple, flexible, yet rich in content.
The Bible Companion Book 1 Genesisโ€“Exodus is the first of twelve books that tracks God story from creation to the end of time. God, who tells His story through families, has graciously given me the privilege of carrying on my fatherโ€™s legacy through The Bible Companion series.

Father and daughter, Pastor Floyd Westbrook and Karen Westbrook Moderow ministering together.

 Review:๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹

This book is a standalone in a series but I feel that eventhough it can be read on its own, it will be much more appreciated when read after the first two books. I'm a twin so I could relate somewhat to Catherine and would have ran off on a dangerous journey to find my sibling(s) also. There is character growth, faith, forgiveness and love that keeps you entwined in this journey with Catherine and Colin and the side characters that play important roles.

More from Lena

Iโ€™ve spent a lot of time with these triplets. They almost feel like part of my extended family. I hope my readers feel that way, too.

I have walked with the Lord for most of my 82 years. He has been with me through hard times and wonderfully blessed times. We learn and grow in Him more in the valleys than on the mountaintops. Thatโ€™s why I write books that show how much He loves. We canโ€™t understand the depths of His love for us unless we need Him desperately. I write these stories to share that love and hope to my readers.

While I am writing a book, I often pray for God to give me the words that will touch readers who need to know Him more. I also want to write a story that will entertain them as well.

If you want to bless me, please leave a review somewhere about the stories you love. I do try to read reviews and learn from them.

Iโ€™m only 15 months from losing the love of my life after spending 59 years with him. If the Lord puts me on your heart, please whisper a prayer for me. Prayer changes things.

Three Words and a Kiss

About the Book

Book: Three Words and A Kiss (Love that Counts Book Three. It can be read as a standalone.)

Author: Sondra Kraak

Genre: Historical Romance

Release date: March 1, 2018

When a big-hearted debutante collides with a small-town blacksmith set in his ways, it can mean only one thingโ€”a war of hearts has come to Pine Creek.

Cameron Wallace thrives as both the blacksmith and the minister in his community of Pine Creek. Out of the fires of a chaotic childhood, heโ€™s forged a peaceful life filled with safe relationships and predictable routines. But when the smithy heโ€™s been renting is sold out from under him, the impulsive woman who buys it stokes the embers of emotions heโ€™d rather keep unlitโ€”and even has the audacity to lend a helping hand to his smithy work.

Samantha Klein has never been afraid to push boundaries when it comes to helping those whom societyโ€”and Godโ€”have overlooked, be they orphans, immigrants, or injured animals. When her latest attempt to aid a group of Chinese women lands her in a newspaper scandal, her high-society family sends her packing from Seattle. Setting out on her own, she purchases the Pine Creek smithy and hatches another plan for helping her immigrant friends. But only weeks after arriving in Pine Creek, her plan turns to ashes, and sheโ€™s overwhelmed by needs she can never hope to meet, including her own need to be seen and cared for. And the one who seems to understand her is the man who wonโ€™t let her anywhere near his heart, no matter the attraction that burns between them.

As Cameron struggles to find a new normal, and Samantha yearns for someone to share her burdens, old hurts and dangerous secrets make them both terrified to admit that what they needโ€”and what God has planned for themโ€”just might be each other.

Three Words and a Kiss is the third book in the Love That Counts Historical Christian romance series. Youโ€™ll find well-developed characters, witty banter, tender journeys of faith and love, and feel-good happily-ever-afters all set in the beautiful mountains of the Pacific Northwest. About the Author

Sondra Kraak is a part-time hobby writer, full-time Jesus follower. A native of Washington State, she now lives in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains where she serves as the Worship Coordinator at her church. Life at home with her Michigan-born husband and two teenagers is full of board games, sports watching (Go Blue!), cooking, cooking, and more cooking, and magically multiplying loads of laundry. Donโ€™t ask her to drink eggnog, but sheโ€™ll happily consume most teas and coffee without fluffy flavorings.

The author of eight historical romances, sheโ€™s working on something a little different (a romcom series). But donโ€™t worry, whether set in the past or present, her delight is to provide readers with stories that not only entertain but nourish the soul.

More from Sondra

My name is Lark. Iโ€™m thirteen, and these are my interviews with Samantha Klein and Cameron Wallace, the heroine and hero of Three Words and a Kiss. I know Samantha and Cameron because . . . well, youโ€™ll have to read their story. For now, you need to know that it was Samanthaโ€™s tender heart that saved me and my two sisters. I asked Samantha and Cameron some questions so you can know them better. Iโ€™ll try not to interject my opinion too much, but I canโ€™t help it. Samantha says Iโ€™m more bullheaded than a bull, but as a city girl, she has zero experience with bulls.

Lark: Samantha, you grew up in Seattle, right?

Samantha: Yes, with a family who values efficiency, good business management, social status, and formality. They provided an education and opportunities for me that not many people receive, and for that Iโ€™m grateful, but what I really wanted was to be understood and seen for who I was.

Lark: And who were you?

Samantha: The young woman who snuck into Chinatown to teach English and who befriended a prostitute.

Lark: If you used to sneak around, why do I get in trouble for doing the same?

Samantha: Because I wasnโ€™t sneaking around with a boy.

Lark: Point made. Letโ€™s move on. You bought a blacksmith shop. Spontaneously. Why would a woman want to do that?

Samantha: Iโ€™m a Klein, and Kleinโ€™s invest. After I embarrassed my familyโ€™s name again, I stumbled onto the opportunity to purchase the Pine Creek smithy and I wanted to redeem myself. As with most of my ideas, they come quickly, and theyโ€™re all I can think about until I act on them. Second thoughts? Those are distractions! With the profits from the shop, I wanted to help the underprivileged who are ignored by proper society. Who was going to notice and help these people if I donโ€™t?

Lark: What was your first impression of Cameron Wallace, the blacksmith of the shop you purchased in Pine Creek?

Samantha: Heโ€™s got deep eyes that study you intensely. Iโ€™ve never thought of myself as interesting, so having those eyes on me often was intimidating. But Iโ€™m not one to let intimidation hold me back. Not that Iโ€™m brave.

Lark: You are brave, even if unintentionally. Tell me three things you love about Cameron. Only three.

Samantha: He possesses an inner strength that draws people, and it comes naturally. He doesnโ€™t even realize how he brings the community together. He possesses an outer strength, too. Have you noticed his forearm muscles?

Lark: No. Gross. But youโ€™re right. He is tall and strong.

Samantha: And those shoulders. Itโ€™s not like heโ€™s a giant, though. I donโ€™t feel overpowered by him.

Lark: You donโ€™t seem to feel overpowered by anyone, thatโ€™s one of the things I like about you. But back to the question. You can list one more thing you love.

Samantha: He thinks things through before acting, which makes me feel secure. I tend to not think things through.

Lark: I know. I benefited from one of your spontaneous decisions, although I was taking care of my sisters just fine before you came along.

Samantha: (hugs Lark) Iโ€™m so glad I found you.

Lark: Letโ€™s not get mushy.

Samantha: I wonโ€™t get mushy about you, but I have more to say about Cam.

Lark: (rolls eyes). You already told me three things.

Samantha: Just one more. Iโ€™ll be quick, I promise. I adore how he talks in sermons without realizing it.

Lark: Eww. Who wants to hear a sermon?

Samantha: I know, right? But I think it shows how metaphorically and deeply he thinks. He brings up profound things as if heโ€™s talking about the weather or what he ate for breakfast. I mean, who really thinks like that? And then thereโ€™s the way he kissesโ€”

Lark: Nope. Weโ€™re done. Thank you.

Samantha: You wouldnโ€™t expect a man who values control and sticks to a plan to kiss in such an unencumbered way, but thatโ€™s whatโ€™s fascinating. Itโ€™s like all that submerged emotion must come out somehow.

Lark: Samantha, I really donโ€™t need to know. Iโ€™m going to ask Cameron some questions now and hope he answers with more modesty. Cameron, letโ€™s get the basics out of the way. Your mother left when you were ten, your father drank himself to death when you were fourteen, and the town collectively raised you. Is that right?

Cameron: Yes. I love the people of Pine Creek. They took me in when I was my angriest.

Lark: Youโ€™ve been at the smithy since you were fourteen. What do you love about the work?

Cameron: Itโ€™s creative. Itโ€™s physical. It requires precision. Itโ€™s not mindless work that anyone can do with brute strength. And yet, at its foundation, itโ€™s simple. Heat. Metal. Force.

Lark: Will you teach me?

Cameron: (shakes head) Listen, smithy work is dangerous. Iโ€™m not comfortable with women learning the trade. Samantha tried, and I was nervous the entire time. The responsibility for safety weighs on me too much.

Lark: I understand, having been responsible for my two younger sisters, but still, I think a woman can do anything a man can do.

Cameron: If youโ€™re that woman, Iโ€™m inclined to agree. (smiles) Donโ€™t you want to know some fun things about me? My favorite color? My favorite food?

Lark: (frowns) Who cares about favorite colors? That tells me nothing about who you really are. I want to know your biggest failure. You give off this image of perfection.

Cameron: I do? I must admit I thought my life was perfect until Samantha brought her chaos into my smithy. But in the end, I saw my pride and my need to let go of control.

Lark: Is that why you took down that verse from above the smithy door?

Cameron: That verse about living a simple life and working with my handsโ€”that was just an excuse to keep me from wanting too much. It was my permission to keep life contained and safe. Samanthaโ€™s big, emotional way of approaching life helped me see that lie.

Lark: Sheโ€™s good at being emotional. You never told me your biggest failure.

Cameron: Some things are private. But Iโ€™ll say this, I lived years up here (points to head) and never let whatโ€™s in here (points to heart) matter. It ate me up. No more. Iโ€™m letting the thoughts and emotions mingle. You should try it sometime.

Lark: Are you saying I stuff my feelings? (shrugs) I canโ€™t be good at everything.

Cameron: Itโ€™s nice to hear you admit that. Youโ€™re extremely self-sufficient for thirteen.

Lark: Almost fourteen, and thank you, but letโ€™s not talk about me. Tell me what bothered you most about Samantha when you first met her.

Cameron: Everything. She waltzed into my routine with these crazy ideas. It put me on edge. But what made me the most nervous was her lack of special awareness. She drifted into my space many times a day, which is dangerous in a smithy. In fact, once . . . (rubs a hand over his beard) . . . never mind. I donโ€™t want to give you any ideas.

Lark: Oh, please. Samantha told me she had trouble keeping her handsโ€”and her mouthโ€”to herself. I would never accidentally kiss a person. Last question. Why did you fall in love with her?

Cameron: (smiling) She sees the world differently from me, and it brought me freedom. Her love is extravagant. It knows no boundaries, and I donโ€™t deserve it. And now that weโ€™re married, that issue with her drifting into my space isnโ€™t an issue. What man complains that his wife canโ€™t keep her hands off him?

Lark: Probably no man. And this is a good place to stop asking questions before I get sick.

Cameron: Now whoโ€™s blushing?

Lark: I donโ€™t blush. Our timeโ€™s up. I think I hear my sisters calling.

Review:๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ‹

I didn't know what to expect out of this book as it is geared towards men, however, I have a son and a brother who I would definitely recommend this book to. I particularly appreciate the chapter on Mental Health as I know men struggle with this most often more silently than women. Using Samsonโ€™s strengths and weaknesses to learn lessons on how to navigate these them in relation to our purpose and passion and not forget the grace God gives us.

About the Author

Todd Woodfill is a modern-day Renaissance man whose life could be inspirational if it didnโ€™t so closely resemble a comedy sketch. Married to his absolutely amazing, beautiful, intelligent, and talented wife Holly for a whirlwind 30 years so far, he couldnโ€™t imagine doing life without her support.  With four incredible children and one extraordinary grandchild, who refer to Todd as Dad, Papa, dork, old timer, and weirdo, Todd has been blessed far more than he deserves.

Passionate about mental health and suicide prevention, menโ€™s ministries, Legos, boxing, and pursuing God, Todd is a man of many talents and clearly a master of none.  But who else can seamlessly switch from being a Jordan sneaker connoisseur to a boxing enthusiast, all while building menโ€™s ministries and helping those with mental health challenges.  Heck, this guy can be found passionately discussing the virtues of mental wellness, only to break into a joyful song from a Disney classic, spreading cheer like a modern-day Mary Poppins with a passion for Christ. His life is a whirlwind of laughter, love, and an unshakable faith, making him the ultimate blend of humor and heart in a world that often takes itself too seriously.

Todd is passionate about menโ€™s ministries, mental health advocacy, Legos, and boxing-yes, he is a man of layers like Shrek.  You might catch Todd talking about Jordan sneakers one moment, throwing a jab at the heavy bag the next, or surprisingly belting out a Disney tune with unapologetic joy.
