Chira Kelly thought she didn’t need anyone…until she met Ben.

Because of one ugly rumor, Chira lives as an outcast at her school. Which is fine with her, because she works better alone. Always has, always will. And at least she has her one and only true friend, Tasha. When Tasha insists that they join a group to visit a possibly haunted abandoned old schoolhouse, she's wary, but joins her friend. Because of that decision, their lives are in jeopardy as a malevolent spirit targets the group. Tragedies and accidents pick them off one by one, and Chira finds herself drawn to the one person who can see the truth. But can he protect her?

EXCERPT

She rips my hall pass from her pad and points it toward the young man sitting across from her desk. “Chira Kelley, meet Ben Oscuro. He’s new here and needs someone to show him around. It just so happens he’s also a member of class 18B.”
I finally lay my eyes on the boy. He doesn’t look up at me, and his disheveled dark hair is just long enough that it hides his eyes. But he pushes himself up from his chair and his slim form towers over me. He’s at least six feet two and his uniform is almost as crumpled as his hair. He swings his backpack onto a strong, square shoulder and nibbles his full bottom lip. His smooth olive skin and dark hair make him look like a foreign rocker, and there’s something about him that seems vaguely familiar.
“Here’s a copy of his class schedule. When you’re not in the same class, I want you to leave a few minutes early and help him find the next class room. That’s your job for today. Got it?”
I swallow back and resist sniffling again. Taking the hall pass and the copy of the schedule from her, I say, “Um…sure.”
“Excellent. Robin, you’re off the hook.”
The office aide pumps a fist in the air before returning to file more papers in the cabinet. The secretary’s chair squeals a dismissal, and Mrs. Campbell picks up her phone, returning to her duties without another word.
Ben pulls open the office door and stands to the side to allow me to go first. The hallway that was empty only a short while ago is now full of students and their incessant conversations. With a shrug, I eye his class schedule quickly. Except for second and sixth period, we have exactly the same schedule. He’s in all of the advanced classes, too. Only he has gym for second period and Latin for sixth – opposite of my schedule, except I take French.
Piece of cake.
I glance up at him again, and his eyes meet mine. My breath hitches. His intense gaze makes me feel like he’s measuring me. The dark pools of his eyes seem deep and bottomless, but there’s something strange about them. They’re brown, but he has colored contacts. Why would anyone color their eyes brown?
My heart flutters. A sniffle escapes me before I can stop it. Ugh. I clear my throat and start in the direction of first period. “Follow me.”
We elbow our way down the freshman hall toward the second floor, but before we start up I point down the way. “Do you know what your locker number is?”
Ben nods and pushes his backpack up on his shoulder further.
I wait for a second and then smile. “What is it?”
“706.” He has a slight accent and his voice is deeper than I expect. I suppress a shiver at the jolt that the musical timbre of his voice sends through my body. I’m resonating like a tuning fork. II really want him to speak again with every fiber of my being. What’s with me?
“Uh…okay.” I swallow, trying to regain composure. And take him to the general area of the locker. “Here it is.”
He looks at it, nods, and returns his hard gaze to me. Is he always so stiff? Probably just nerves from being new.
“I know you don’t have any books to put in it, but do you want to try out the combination?”
He lifts one shoulder in a shrug and spins the combo quickly through the three numbers. I purposefully avert my eyes so he knows I’m not peeking. He opens the locker wide, nods toward me and then closes it again.
“Great. We have first period over here.”
“You and I have the same first period?”
My body vibrates again, and I blink hard. So glad my back was to him so he couldn’t see the effect his voice has on me. I swallow and face him. “Actually, yeah. Our schedules are very similar. It’s a smallish school so there’re only a few tracks that juniors can be on.”
He nods, and his eyes are half lidded as if he’s bored already.
I lead him toward our class room. “We don’t really have assigned seats, so you can pretty much sit anywhere you want. I’ll show you to the gym at the end of class. I have French next, but it’s not too far from there.”
I lead him to the front of the class, and my friend, Tasha, gives me a wan smile and raises her eyebrows, looking back and forth between me and Ben. She mouths, Who’s that?
I roll my eyes and put up one finger toward her to let her know I’ll tell her in a minute. Then I turn to the teacher. I hand him the schedule from the office. “Hi, Mr. Scott, this is Ben Oscuro, a transfer.”
Mr. Scott sets down the Mountain Dew he was drinking and offers Ben a wide grin. He puts a hand out for him to shake. Ben hesitates but takes the hand in what looks like a firm grip. Mr. Scott shakes his hand afterward. “That’s some grip you’ve got there.” He laughs and leans down to the bottom drawer of his desk and hands Ben a Geography text book.
With a nod, I return to Tasha and squeeze into the desk next to hers. Because I’m at Jackson Hall partially on scholarship and partially on my father’s insurance money, I’m somewhat of a social pariah. My only real friend is Tasha Brown, a pariah herself, being one of the few African-American kids in the school. Still she tends to be more popular than me, because at least her family has the money they’ve made in the night club and music business. But then there’s that rumor…
“So who is the new hottie?” Tasha hops up and down in her seat.
I shake my head at her. “You are one big hormone, you know that? Sure, he’s cute, but is there any guy in the room you don’t consider a hottie?”
Tasha scans the room, considering for a moment with her hand on her chin and a very serious expression on her face. Her hair is in the typical pigtail braids she usually uses to play up the uniform. She has on no sweater, and her shirt is one size too small, causing the buttons at the front to bow and expose part of her red bra. Finally she returns her gaze to me. “There’s only one guy in here that doesn’t rank hottie.”
“Really? Who?”
She leans in conspiratorially and whispers, “Mr. Scott.”
I nearly choke on a laugh as I eye the middle aged, balding teacher at the front of the room. But I have to admit, Jackson Hall is a prep school. And no one can afford to make their children look their best more than the wealthy. I guess if I take my father’s words to heart, it’s better to be the poor kid in the rich kids’ school…than the other way around. Right?
Tasha’s smile returns and I follow her gaze to figure out why. Ben Oscuro walks down the aisle between us and takes the desk right behind mine. The hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. He smells like pine and mint, and it reminds me of the outdoors. When I open them again, Tasha’s smile has grown impossibly wider. She leans towards me and whispers, “What was that you said about hormones again?”
I shove my elbow toward her but she dodges me with a giggle.

Cover Reveal: Journey to Faith by Tina Klinesmith

Title: Journey to Faith (Journey #3) Author: Tina Klinesmith Genre: Christian Fiction/Romance Publication Date: April 15, 2014 Cover Designer: Allison Brennen Event Organized By: Literati Author Services, Inc.

~ Synopsis ~

Michele and David have it all: successful careers, a loving marriage and the perfect daughter. Until the past raises its head, intent this time on wrecking damage to their daughter. When tragedy strikes, they find their faith in God and His plans tested. Can their family remain strong in the face of adversity or will they crumble in ruins? Will love fail them when they need it most or will it restore their faith in what the future holds?

~ Excerpt ~

Even with the television turned up, Faith could hear her parents talking about her in the kitchen. Did they think she couldn’t hear them? They were acting like she’d just committed a crime or something. Well, technically, punching Raif in the face could be considered assault and battery, according to her father, but it wasn’t like she started it. Not that she planned on explaining the situation to anyone. The less everyone knew about this, the faster it would blow over. There was no way that she was going to tell them it was because of her mother. If she even hinted at that, Mama would be devastated. Faith pressed her earphones into her ears and tapped the button on her iPod, allowing the music to drown out the voices in the kitchen. She wished the sounds of the rock band could drown out her own misgivings as well. She wanted to scream with the frustration building inside her but knew it would be useless. She didn’t want to burden anyone else with her troubles. Her parents tried getting her to open up to them but she didn’t think they’d understand. They just kept telling her that learning to deal with unpleasant people was part of growing up, and she should pray for Raif. Why should she pray for the one boy who seemed out to destroy her reputation as well as her sanity? She hoped this would be the catalyst that would cause Raif and his friends to leave her alone again, to allow her to return to blending into the background. She was sick of everyone having such high expectations for her to be the perfect girl. Why couldn’t she just be a normal sixteen year old girl, worrying about boys and shopping or grades and getting into college? She slapped at the throw pillow on the couch, pounding it against the back cushion. Her grandfather was a pastor, her father was a police officer and her mother was a counselor. It was a lot of pressure to have her grandfather’s congregation watching, not to mention how bad it would make her dad look at work if she caused trouble. She was tired of living in a fishbowl, where it felt every move seemed under scrutiny. Faith wondered if she could ever measure up to the image people expected of her. Why should she be perfect? Her mother hadn’t been. By the time Mama was her age, she’d already been drinking, doing drugs, had stolen Papa Ramirez’s car and was locked in juvenile hall, serving time. Faith pressed the heel of her hands against her burning eyes, willing the tears of frustration to go away. What made any of them think she was anything special? She struggled in school, she couldn’t seem to get things that were easy for everyone else, and she didn’t like to be touched. She was weird, even her friends thought she was a different and she felt like they were just putting up with her. She hated feeling like the outcast and was tired of being on the outside looking in. Just once she wanted to be the girl she pretended to be, the one her parents seemed to believe she was - popular, smart, fun, happy. Unfortunately, it was all an act. Faith shoved the iPod into her pocket and made her way down the hall to her room, wondering what she was going to do now that she was suspended for the next couple days? She knew that her mother would stay home with her. And won’t that be fun?” she taunted her reflection in the mirror. She frowned at the girl staring back at her. “You’re a freak, you know that right?” she whispered. Resentment flared bright and hot in her chest as she fought the urge to smash the mirror. Anything to keep the stranger in the mirror from looking back at her. She didn’t want to be Faith anymore. As hard as she tried, she couldn’t be the perfect daughter, quiet student or trustworthy friend that everyone wanted. She was lacking…she didn’t know what made her feel incomplete. This pressure was just too much. She pulled the headphones off and wound them around the iPod, tossing it onto her bed and looked around the room, antsy. Her room was clean and simply decorated. Since she’d never been a tom-boy or extremely girly, Faith found herself skirting the middle ground. As a result, she’d often kept her room filled with only the things that held her interests - a few swimming trophies, a softball and glove David had given her as a little girl, a stuffed bear Micah had brought home to her from a parishioner and a picture of her parents on her dresser with a necklace that belonged to her grandmother hung on the corner. Her room had been decorated with butter yellow walls because Faith claimed they made her feel happy when she woke but they didn’t seem to help now. She went to her closet and flipped on the overhead light. Picking through the clothing hanging all around her, she searched for something to fit her mood - something she could pull over her head to help her disappear, hiding within herself. She reached for a thin, black hoodie and slipped it on over her white t-shirt. She grabbed a hair band from her desk and wound her long dark waves into a tight knot at her neck and flipped the hood over her head. She looked at her reflection again, wondering how she could still look the same when bitter discontent flowed through her veins. She reached for an eyeliner pencil and outlined thick black smudges around her golden eyes. “There,” she said, tossing it back on the dresser. She jumped, wiping away the makeup under her eyes as her bedroom door opened and her father entered. He arched a brow in question and sat on her bed, not waiting for an invitation. “Trying a new look?” His lips twitched as if he was trying to hold back a smile. She turned and faced him, folding her arms over her chest and leaning a hip against the dresser. “No.” “Faith, I’d really like to hear your side of what happened today.” She pursed her lips and shrugged. “No, you don’t, Dad. You want me to say I’m sorry and I won’t do it again.” She threw her hands in the air, frustrated. “But, I can’t promise you that. If he keeps…Oh, never mind!” “Go on,” her father encouraged, patting the bed beside him. “He who? This boy you hit?” Faith sighed. It didn’t even matter. Her father wouldn’t be able to stop Raif from making comments. No one could. Especially since her mother would be the first to admit that the things he was saying were completely true. She had been a drug addict; she had served time for manslaughter. It didn’t make living with that stigma any easier. “It’s nothing, Dad.” She slumped onto the bed beside him. Her father slipped an arm around her shoulders and she allowed herself to lay her head against his chest, his heartbeat strong and solid. He smelled like leather and soap. It was a comforting scent that always reminded her of her childhood and the nights her father rocked her back to sleep when she woke from a nightmare. She adored him and hurt knowing she’d disappointed him. He ran a hand over her back, his fingers making small circles on her shoulder. “Baby Girl, I know things aren’t always easy for you. Sometimes your mother and I forget what it’s like but we love you more than anything in this world and we would do anything for you. You know that, right?” Faith wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face against his chest. She knew her black eyeliner was probably leaving streaks on his polo shirt but she needed his strength more than she worried about the material. “I love you too, Daddy.” Hot tears scalded the corners of her eyes and she knew, with his arms around her, she wouldn’t be able to stanch the flow. She sniffed and tried to keep him from seeing her tears but he knew better. “Aw, baby.” Her father wound his arms around her slim shoulders. “You know you can tell us anything.” “I know,” she muttered, her voice muffled against his chest. “He’s just so mean, and I just couldn’t take any more and…” Faith’s voice hiccupped and she realized the dam of emotions was broken. She had to stop before she said too much but she couldn’t convince her tongue. “He said all those things in front of everyone and I just snapped and before I knew it, he was holding his eye and there was blood everywhere.” “Honey,” her father’s voice remained calm and steady, as if he was trying to soothe a wounded animal. “Shhh, it’s okay.” He cupped her chin between his thumb and forefinger and smiled. “You’re a lot like your Mama, you know that?” It was as if he had thrown cold water into her face without even realizing what he’d done. Faith felt herself shut down. She knew he saw the change in her instantly and searched her face trying to figure out what he’d said. She pressed away from his chest and rose from the bed, tucking her hands inside the sweatshirt, hugging her arms around her as if warding off a chill. She used the cotton material to wipe away the tears that coursed down her cheek. “I’m fine, Dad. It’s nothing.” “You don’t sound fine.” He rose from the bed and took a step toward her. She held up a hand, still gripping the material of the sweatshirt in her fist, and backed away, bumping into the dresser, knocking over the picture frame. “I’m fine, Dad.” Her father stopped for a moment, then nodded. She knew he didn’t believe her, nor did she think they wouldn’t revisit this conversation later but, for the moment, he allowed her some space. “Dinner will be here soon. Mom ordered your favorite, pepperoni pizza with extra cheese and olives.” Faith bit at the corner of her bottom lip, feeling guilty. She was getting angry when her father compared her to her mother but her mother was wonderful to her, in spite of the trouble she’d caused today. Yet the outrage at her father’s words continued to well up in her. She was not like her mother. Her mother had never lived in this fishbowl of expected perfection. What she wouldn’t give for even a bit of the freedom her mother had a teenager. Anything was better than this façade. Why couldn’t anyone else see that she was dying to break free from this mold they tried to fit her into? She just wanted to be Faith, but she wasn’t even sure yet who Faith was.

Twelve Steps Release Day Blitz

Twelve Steps
by Veronica Bartles
Release Date: 03/25/14

Book Summary:
Sixteen-year-old Andi is tired of being a second-class sibling to perfect sister Laina. There in Laina's shadow, Andi's only noticeable feature is her pretty awesome hair. And even that is eclipsed by Laina's perfect everything else.

When Andi’s crush asks her to fix him up with Laina, Andi decides enough is enough and devises a twelve-step program to wrangle the spotlight away from Laina. After all, great hair must count for something.

Step 1: Admit she’s powerless to change her perfect sister, and accept that her life really, really sucks. OK, maybe that's two steps in one.

Step 4: Make a list of her good qualities besides great hair. There have got to be at least three good qualities, right?

Step 7: Demand attention for more than just her shortcomings, and break out of her shell. Easier said that done, but worth the effort in the long-run.

When a stolen kiss from her crush ends in disaster, Andi finds that her prince isn’t as charming as she'd hoped, and realizes she may need a new program--perhaps with less steps!

As cracks in Laina’s flawless façade begin to show, the sisters work together to find a spotlight big enough for both to shine.

About the Author
As the second of eight children and the mother of four, Veronica Bartles is no stranger to the ups and downs of sibling relationships. (She was sandwiched between the gorgeous-and-insanely-popular older sister and the too-adorable-for-words younger sister.) She uses this insight to write stories about siblings who mostly love each other, even while they’re driving one another crazy.   When she isn’t writing or getting lost in the pages of her newest favorite book, Veronica enjoys knitting fabulous bags and jewelry out of recycled plastic bags and old VHS tapes, sky diving (though she hasn’t actually tried that yet), and inventing the world’s most delectable cookie recipes.  TWELVE STEPS is Veronica Bartles's first novel.

Book Blast: Shelly Crane's Devoured Series

Title: Altered (Devoured #3)
Author: Shelly Crane
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal
Publication Date: April 29, 2014
Cover Designer: Regina at MaeIDesign
Event Organized By: Literati Author Services, Inc.

~ Synopsis ~

Enoch is tested.
His brother is human, the thing he hates. He watches as the brother he knew is stripped away by his love for Clara. He's never hated someone as much as he hated her...but the bond forced him to not only want to protect her, but feel things he never had before.
When a girl needs his help, that split second decision changes his whole world in one instant. A Devourer's Fate...

                                                     Excerpt
I fed on her terror and fright and it tasted like heaven in my mouth. But as I looked down at that woman who had just given herself to me, and I hadn’t even had to persuade her to, it washed over me all at once how I didn’t really want to hurt her. That I wanted to hurt people, but not her. Not really. I had gotten everything I needed from her without doing that, hadn’t I? I was full and sated. Now I was just letting my true nature take over, letting the Devourer in me take over.
But wasn’t that what I was supposed to do? I looked down at that woman and was so confused. I cursed Clara and Eli and all their love and human bullcrap for turning me into the thing that I was now.
No. I realized then that this was my turning point. That if I let this girl go, that I would be just like my brother one day and that wasn’t what I wanted. I was not going to be some human. I was a Devourer. My chin ached from clenching it so tightly. I turned my glare fully on her and knew that honestly it wasn’t her fault, but she was about to pay the price for my brother’s mistake.
“I’m sorry, love.” I lifted her by her arms and then leaned into her, pressing her to the wall.
“For what?” her small voice asked, falsely reassured by my about-face. “What are you doing to me?”
“I’m sorry that our night is just beginning.”
She seemed to understand and her face crumpled. “Please. I’m sorry for whatever I said to—”
“It’s not you,” I grinned as evilly as I could muster, “it’s me.”
